Medicaid Planning

The process of applying for Medicaid is complex and often times confusing, not to mention emotionally draining, as any caregiver having been through it will tell you. Part of the problem is awareness. Unless you’ve personally experienced it, it is hard to comprehend the gravity of what many caregivers and their family members go through on a daily basis. Lack of planning is another issue which can drastically increase the burden (emotional, financial, or otherwise) on all those involved, causing crisis rather than clarity, and leads to panic instead of a plan.

The application itself is no different. It is not uncommon for Medicaid applications to reach one or two thousand pages. For example, Mr. Costa recently received an approval on a record 4,300 page application! This is largely due to Medicaid’s five year lookback period, which in part, requires bank statements on every account, either opened or closed, within the last sixty months. Extensive vital statistic information must also be supplied, such as the applicant’s social security card, birth certificate, and marriage license, to name a few.
